Moving into a new home is an incredibly exciting time, whether it be your first home or if you are upgrading to a larger property. It can also be hectic and stressful, particularly if you are planning the move around work and family commitments. To help you, we’ve put together some tips to help make the moving day go without a glitch.
This article does not constitute advice. Professional advice should be taken prior to acting on any part of it. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage or any other debt secured on it.
Start ahead of time
The move can easily descend into chaos if it is not planned properly. We advise that you start planning the move at least two – three weeks ahead of the move date.
This will give you time to book in professional movers (if you plan on using on them) or hire a suitably sized van if you plan on doing it yourself.
In this time, you can also decide how you are going to structure the move. You could use a coloured coded system, where rooms are designated a specific colour. This may seem a little OTT but it will stop anything getting mislaid or lost in the move.
Change of address
Once a date has been set for exchange and the move (these two things generally happen on the same date) you need to start informing people of your new address. The priorities should be your doctor, dentist, schools and banks and building societies.
In cases where it is not possible to do this before move day, the Post Office offers a mail redirection service. The cost of this service depends on the number of surnames registered, how long you need the service for and whether the mail is being directed to an address in the UK or overseas.
Finalising bills
On the day you leave your old property, it is important to make note of any meter readings. Likewise, do the same when you move into your new property.
You can either make a note of this, or an even better idea is to take a picture on your phone. This way it can’t easily get lost.
Packing tips
To prevent your property and valuables getting damaged in the move, we suggest:
- Wrapping objects in bubble wrap or layers of newspaper
- Using sturdy boxes / creates
- Placing heavier objects at the bottom
- Sealing boxes with strong tape so objects can’t fall out during the move
