Over the last few weeks, mother nature has not been kind to the nation. There were hundreds of flood warnings, power cuts and evacuations across the country where the worst of the storm damage hit. But now that the storm has settled, it’s time to repair any damage that might have been done.
This does not constitute advice and advice should be sought in all instances before acting on it.
So, what do you do if your property was damaged by the extreme weather?
With buildings insurance, you’re in luck. Usually, your policy will cover financial loss caused by storm damage. Most damage will be covered – from missing roof tiles and broken windows to more serious problems like structural damage from the wind or falling trees.
Unfortunately, there might be some fine print in your policy that could prevent you from successfully claiming. Some insurance providers have different definitions of storms in their policies compared to the Association of British Insurers (ABI). So, it’s highly advisable to confirm what constitutes a storm according to your provider before submitting a claim.
What’s covered?
What will be covered is entirely dependent on your policy. Buildings cover will pay out for damage to your home so you can replace lost items and repair things that need to be fixed without worrying about the cost.
You also might be able to be reimbursed for any expenses you incur for accommodation if you are displaced from your home due to damage. As always, the level of cover you purchased and the excess you chose will dictate how much your pay out will be.
Contents insurance will cover your possessions but again, what’s covered will depend on what you originally included in your policy.
How to claim
Alert your insurer as soon as possible that you are planning to make a claim. When it’s safe to do so, take photos of the damage, compile a list of repairs, and keep anything you think you might need as evidence to back up your claim.
