News update: Insurer Changes Due to COVID-19

The coronavirus pandemic has rocked the globe – and doctors, nurses, medics, and other medical professionals continue to work on the front line with patients every day. Obviously, the last thing healthcare professionals want to worry about while they’re working to save lives is whether their life and livelihood are at risk, and there’s been an influx of enquiries into life cover policies as of late.

This does not constitute advice and advice should be sought in all instances before acting on it.

Life insurance policies are meant to provide peace of mind to the policyholder that their family will be taken care of financially if something were to happen to them. But due to the COVID-19 outbreak, many insurers have had to modify their practices and offerings.

Here’s a roundup of just a few insurance providers and how they are shifting what they are offering in these trying times.

AIG Life

  • Decisions will be postponed on applicants with symptoms or who are self-isolating.
  • New clients should disclose any cold or flu-like symptoms.

  • Added multiple questions related to the coronavirus such as experiencing symptoms, positive tests, self-isolation for any reason, proximity and exposure to people with the virus.
  • Any positive response moves your application to an underwriter for individual consideration.
  • Applications requiring GP reports will be postponed since they will not request medical evidence in the midst of the outbreak.

Legal & General

  • Added coronavirus related questions to its applications.
  • Specific protocols to follow based on answers and individual circumstances.

  • Temporarily suspended offering one week and one day IP policies due to COVID-19
  • Has stopped paying claims for self-isolation

These few updates only skim the surface of changes that will hit the insurance industry over the next few weeks.

We can only hope by the end of the month, the landscape is entirely different and these measures won’t have too great of an impact, but new information comes out every day so no doubt insurers will keep shifting.

There’s no doubt this situation is changing rapidly so it’s important to check with your IFA to be sure you’re aware of the latest news and updates that might affect you or healthcare workers.

We’re available any time to help during this crisis, so don’t hesitate to reach out whenever you need.
