News Update: Which Life Insurers are Carrying out Remote Screening?

With the nationwide lockdown extended, the end of the coronavirus pandemic is not yet in sight. As the general population continues to stay at home, we know that healthcare professionals like you are tirelessly putting themselves on the frontline. In an effort to adapt, life insurance providers are actively altering their products and policies. Here’s an update.

Amongst the many changes life insurers are making are the postponement of applications and the cessation of requesting GP reports for clients that need medical evidence as part of their application.

As a result, insurers have been forced to come up with alternative solutions to get the information needed. One solution put forward by Medical Screening Solutions (MSS) is the reconfiguration of the process so that medical evidence can be collected without a GP report or in-person screening. Other screening companies are following suit by developing remote solutions.

Here’s a rundown of how some insurers are incorporating new screening measures:

  • Introduced virtual nurse exams for life applications
  • Includes medical questions, height and weight measurements, and a blood sample
  • Self-testing kits will be made ahead of virtual exams
  • Does not allow for blood pressure checks or urine test so not suitable in all cases

British Friendly

  • Offering virtual medical screenings with a nurse
  • Consists of height and weight measurements, blood pressure if a measuring device is already available, and a self kit for finger-prick blood sample collection

  • Using MSS’s new and improved service for life and critical illness applications
  • Includes remote, digital video assessment and a ‘customer kit pack’ with a measuring tape for waist and hip measurements and an at-home finger-prick blood testing kit

  • Virtual medical screenings where overall health will be evaluated
  • Finger-prick self-test kit, measurement of height and weight, and blood pressure (if the client already has tools to measure)
  • Exploring other options such as phone screenings wherever possible before virtual screening
  • Possibly extending to critical illness and income protection plans as well

The Exeter

  • Piloting screenings for life insurance and income protection applications that require medical evidence
  • Assess weight, blood pressure (if monitor already available), and a finger-prick self test kit.
