Moving house can be a stressful process. From house hunting and mortgage applications to packing and transferring all your earthly belongings, there are so many things to consider.

If you find yourself moving this time of year, here are 5 tips to help everything go smoothly on the day.

  1. ‘Tis the season
Autumn is a good time to move – you don’t need to contend with the inclement weather that winter may bring, and you run less of a risk of getting caught in the sweltering summer heat. As such, the rates you’ll find from moving companies this time of year should reflect the supply and demand of the moving market, so don’t be afraid to haggle. Keep in mind, many people usually begin new leases the first of the month, so if you can plan to move outside this busy time, you’ll save.
  2. Preparation is key
Trying to firm up the logistics surrounding a move could potentially be a full time job! For smaller moves, you may be able to get by on your own, but if your move is going to be big or far, you might benefit from moving professionals. You’ll also need to be organised when it comes to packing (and subsequent unpacking). However you remember things best — either with good old fashioned paper and pen, or with the assistance of technology — make sure you’re writing out a list of everything you need to accomplish so nothing gets missed.
  3. Execution is critical
Once you have your plan of attack, you’ll need to carry it out flawlessly. Make sure there’s more method than madness during packing: go room by room so everything is all together, pack items in boxes efficiently, and label everything. Set aside a box or luggage for essential items you’ll need right away or during the move. Not only will this help you stay organised while packing, but unpacking in your new home will be a breeze.
  4. Ready your new home
Once you have your moving in date, you should ensure your utilities (heat, water, electricity) and luxuries (television and internet) will be switched on beforehand. By setting these up in advance, you’ll have plenty of time to search for the best deal. Nothing ruins the first night in your new home like the lack of heat or entertainment.
  5. Home sweet home
You chose your home for a reason, so be sure to enjoy it! Make sure you find time to relax and unwind so you can settle in and feel at home. If that means unpacking and organising everything straight away, then go for it. If that means exploring all the delights your new neighbourhood has to offer, then that’s great, too. Take the time to get to know your new home, inside and out.

Of course, many of these tips will be relevant throughout the year as well. Moving doesn’t need to be a stressful endeavour! Planning, executing, and exploring are all things to look forward to when moving house and will help make the process easier to navigate.
